The Rio Grande SUN spent much of 2018 covering the Jicarilla Apache Nation, in the northwest reaches of Rio Arriba County. From external pressure from state education officials over failing schools, to internal conflict over embezzlement and nepotism, SUN reporters kept readers informed in a turbulent year for the Nation.

The Dulce Volleyball team made the State championship game!! Hey there is one subject the Sun forgot to mention. Guess one bright spot wasn't good enough to mention when the whole intent of this article is to remind everyone of how bad a year Dulce has had internally. Not to mention its not any business of non-tribal members. Just a hint at our status. What more can we expect when current and ex-councilman are ex-disc jockeys and newspaper writers that manage to win popularity contests. Ask how many have education in tribal law that didn't start when they got in office. All they see is 60k, 70k, and 80k yearly salaries that include free vehicle and paid trips to other reservations where none of the general population get an invite. I want to see San Carlos Apache, Orlando FL, and Jackson WY not to mention monthly retirement check for life as if per-cap isn't enough. Unfortunately my family isn't big enough to get me in. Am I a hater? No. I'm one of the little guys who sees it like how many others do. When dealing with the amount of money the tribe does. We will never have true leadership. So thanks to our lady Hawks. You're the one bright star of this year!!! Congrats

Editor's note: The intent of this page is to inform people who otherwise would not have been able to read these stories. In fact, members of the Nation asked us to post them online because when we started publishing them in print, someone was buying all the copies sent to Dulce, which prevented anyone else from reading them.

This page is entirely separate from our 1,235-word story published Nov. 22 about Dulce competing in the state volleyball championship, which can be found here.
