Registering to Vote

The deadline to register to vote online or by mail is Oct. 6.

You can register to vote on the Secretary of State’s website, at the following link: https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/WebPages/InstructionsStep1.aspx

You can also register to vote by printing a voter registration form, filling it out, and mailing it to the Rio Arriba County Clerk’s Office (7 Main Street, Tierra Amarilla, NM 87575 OR 1122 Industrial Park Road, Española, NM 87532). A registration form may be found at the following link: https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/VRForms/VRFormEnglishFinal.pdf

You may also request a paper form of the application by contacting the County Clerk’s Office by phone at 575-588-7724 (Tierra Amarilla) or 505-753-1780 (Española); or in person, by waiting at the front door of the Office and calling to request service.

County residents will also be able to register in-person Oct. 31 at the County warehouse at 714 Calle Don Diego in Española or at the County Clerk’s Office at 7 Main Street in Tierra Amarilla.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot

On Election Day, there will be no polling locations in Los Ojos, Cebolla, Vallecitos, Lybrook, Lindrith, Coyote, Canjlon, Cañones and Ojo Sarco, so the County Clerk’s Office will mail residents of those communities absentee ballots 28 days before the election.

All other County residents who want to vote absentee must request an absentee ballot. The Clerk’s Office must receive their applications by 5 p.m. on Oct. 20. County residents may apply for an absentee ballot through the Secretary of State’s website, at the following link: https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/WebPages/AbsenteeApplication.aspx?type=RA

To apply for an absentee ballot, voters may also contact the County Clerk’s Office in person, by going to the front door of either the Office in Tierra Amarilla or the Office in Española, calling the Office and requesting service; by mail; or by phone.

The first day the County Clerk’s Office may start mailing out requested absentee ballots is Oct. 6. The Office asks voters to allow at least 7 days for receipt of their absentee ballots from the day the Office mails the ballots.
