Alejandra Gonzalez, 17, died in a single-car crash at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Las Vegas Street late at night on Jan. 9, according to Española Police Department officials.

Gonzalez’s passenger Sydney Shroulote was transported to Española Hospital and later to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque for several injuries, but was conscious when first responders arrived on scene, according to an incident report. Department spokesperson Jeremy Apodaca said Jan. 14 that the Department does not know Shroulote’s current condition.

The cause of the crash was undetermined at press time, but Apodaca said the car’s seat belts were not used, they were traveling at a high rate of speed and alcohol was not a factor. An incident report states the car appeared to have left the roadway on North Riverside Drive and drove along the sidewalk for about 80 feet before crossing Las Vegas Street and striking a phone line box, a stop sign and a wooden pole. The car reportedly became airborne on impact, clearing a drainage ditch and small wall before crashing into a tree.

Gonzalez was charged in 2018 with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and tampering with evidence in relation to the murder of 18-year-old Cameron Martinez. She was alleged to have driven the car from which one of the shooters fired on the car containing Martinez.

Gonzalez, then 16, cooperated with law enforcement in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and reportedly aided New Mexico State Police in its investigation, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant for one of the suspected shooters. An attorney for the alleged driver of the other car said in a previous hearing that Gonzalez served probation over the incident.
