Casados sworn in

New Española School District Board member Matthew Casados was sworn in to office July 15 by Magistrate Judge Alexandra Naranjo. He replaces Yolanda Salazar, who resigned.

Española School District’s newest Board member was sworn July 15 at the Board’s regular meeting. Matthew Casados, 53, of Santa Cruz officially took the District 1 Board position, vacated by Yvonne Salazar.

Rio Arriba Magistrate Judge Alexandra Naranjo swore in Casados, in front a crowd of teachers, department heads and supporters.

Casados said he would do his best for his constituents and work to improve the District.

Immediately after Casados was sworn in, Board member Brandon Bustos was nominated and elected to fill Trujillo’s secretary slot. Board member Jeremy Maestas nominated Bustos.

“You’re making history here,” Maestas said. “First you were elected as the youngest board member ever seen and now you’re the youngest officer to serve.”

The vote was unanimous, a break from the fractured Board’s regular 3-2 votes, the Board is known to make on important decisions.
