State Police are investigating an early-morning crash May 26 that severely injured one man.

Robert Milligan, 33, of Chamá, was driving northbound on Highway 84 just north of Abiquiú at about 5:52 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel of his Nissan car, State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said.

Miligan ran off the road, which caused him to wake up and overcorrect, according to Garcia. That caused the vehicle to spin and the car flipped and rolled several times, coming to rest on the side of the road.

Garcia said the tires were nearly sheared off the vehicle from the crash, and Milligan was ejected from the vehicle.

State Police requested a helicopter to transport the man to St. Vincent Hospital, where he was in intensive care as of Monday night, Garcia said.

Police conducted a blood draw following the crash, but Garcia said the investigating officer did not note the smell of alcohol at the crash scene, nor did he find any alcohol containers after checking the scene.
