    The Española Valley wrestling team finished 1-6 at the Southwestern Duals competition hosted last week by Rio Rancho High School.

    The Sundevils defeated Gallup in head-to-head competition, but lost matches to Rio Rancho, Los Lunas and Santa Fe, all of New Mexico and to Liberal, Kan. and Woodland, Texas.

    The top wrestler for the Sundevils was sophomore Mariano Montoya , who finished the tournament with a 6-1 record at 145 pounds.    Senior Don Medina, a contender for 171-pound Class AAAA state title, did not participate because of a knee injury suffered during football season.

    Española did go undefeated in matches against Taos and Peñasco Nov. 29.
