SUN Staff Report

3/25/10

Rio Arriba Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a group of men who stole a Rio Arriba County-owned trailer Sunday morning.

The County’s Streets Department reported missing an 18-foot trailer used to haul maintenance equipment Sunday morning, deputy Cody Martinez said. Surveillance tapes show that between 4:30 and 5 a.m. Sunday, three or four men driving a Ford Expedition pulled into the vehicle storage yard on Industrial Park Road, hitched the trailer and drove away, Martinez said. The suspects also apparently cut the lock off the yard’s gate, Martinez said.

“They were in and out in a minute and a half,” deputy Algin Mendes said. “Whoever it was, they knew exactly what they were going for.”

The trailer was valued at between $3,000 and $3,400, Martinez said. Mendes said the trailer contained two 24-foot culverts when it was stolen.

Mendes said he and Martinez are attempting to identify suspects using surveillance tapes.

County Fleet Maintenance Coordinator Paul Martinez said no decision had been made as to whether to replace the trailer, which he said the County purchased for $1,900. He said the trailer was insured.

“We’d like to see if we can locate it first,” he said.
