Dorothy A. Garcia

January 23, 1945 - October 11, 2021

Dorothy Garcia of Pojoaque, NM, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her parents Benito and Diolinda Baca, and brother Benito Baca.

Dorothy grew up in El Rancho, NM.  She worked and retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory.  Many will remember her from her days of playing softball, being an active member of the Pojoaque Valley Little League and from her job moonlighting at La Mesita Restaurant.  She was known for her delicious biscochitos for Christmas and her confetti eggs for Easter, two holidays that she loved to celebrate.

She had a passion for watching sports.  She was a fan of tennis, her favorite players were Roger Federer and Serena Williams.  One of her fondest memories was taking her family to NYC to watch both of them play in the US Open.  She also loved trips to Denver to support her Denver Nuggets.  On Sundays after mass, you knew never to call her until after football was over, because she was an avid fan and enjoyed watching all the games, but she cheered for her children’s favorite teams and always liked participating in her weekly football pools.

Dorothy took pleasure in gambling and could often be found at the casino.  She also loved going to the horse races and playing poker with friends.  She was the first one to sign up for Super Bowl pools and her family trips with the girls to Las Vegas were always memorable.

Her kids were the most important things in her life and she always went above and beyond to take care of them and shower them with love. She absolutely adored “her babies” too, her fur babies that is.  She would babysit them whenever she could and spoil them rotten.

It was Dorothy’s nature to always put others first.  She was loving, nurturing, generous and caring.  She had the most wonderful personality, and no matter how she was feeling, she would always say she was “super duper”!

Dorothy is survived by her son Joe Garcia and wife Maria.  Daughter Jennifer Saavedra and husband Aaron.  Sister Henrietta Lujan and husband Michael.  Nieces and nephews Stacie Vigil, Michael Lujan and Angelica Turrieta.  Father of her children, Joe Garcia Sr. and wife Debra. She remained close with her in-laws and is also survived by Gloria Garcia, Ramon Garcia and wife Marvine, Flora Martinez and husband Ross, Annabelle Brazeal and husband Ron, Robert Garcia and wife Lucy, and Ben Garcia and wife Charlotte, and many other relatives and friends.

Services for Dorothy will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021 with a public viewing in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of  DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola at 6pm, with a rosary to follow at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Church in Pojoaque at 10am, with burial to follow at the El Rancho Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers are Michael Lujan, J.C. Garcia, Bobby Garcia, Giovanni Lopez, Ted Perio, and Leon Ortiz.

Dorothy will be greatly missed.  She was loved and cherished by all who knew her.
