Elmo Peña

Elmo Peña, 80 years old, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, Tio, and friend passed away peacefully on Saturday January 1, 2022, in Grants, NM.  Elmo was born July 2, 1941, in La Madera, New Mexico to Laborin Peña, Sr and Maria Erminda Peña.After graduating from High school, he took a job with Bueno Foods as a delivery driver in New Mexico and Colorado. He then completed his training and worked as a “Hot Shot” fighting wildfires throughout the western United States.  In 1960 He began mining in Colorado and in 1964 he became a Uranium Miner in Grants, New Mexico. He relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980 to work as a Nuclear Weapons Worker where  he remained until his retirement. He was a proud member of the Laborer’s Local 872 for 20 years.Elmo had a lifelong love of classic Chevy cars and trucks, he enjoyed showing them off.  He enjoyed being outdoors.  Elmo took up bowling after his retirement and enjoyed spending time with his “ bowling family”.  He was truly a “morning person”, woke up happy  every day.  Whistled from sunup to sundown. He was gifted with a positive outlook and great sense of humor and was a friend for life. He is survived by son, Raymond Peña, daughters, Patricia Peña (Eugene) and Beverly Peña, eight Grandchildren Jason Whetten, Rachel Whetten, Steven Whetten, JeNae Knutson (Spencer),  Andrew Pena, Samantha Peña,  Raymond Manzanares, Reina Peña, and six Great grandchildren Jaden Whetten, Makenna Whetten, Jack Whetten; Eliana Whetten, Draxtin Whetten, Ava Manzanares, Brothers: Elizardo Pena, Irolamio (Mary) Peña of Milan, NM.  Sister: Loyola Loomis, Rosella Cedillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico.He is preceded in death by his parents: Laborin Peña, Sr., and Erminda (Gallegos) Peña, Brothers: Laborin Peña Jr, Celestino Peña, Anselmo Peña, Prudencio Peña, Isaias Peña,  Sisters: Abranita Lucero, Adonelia Ortega, Clarita Peña Montoya, Rebecca Peña.Elmo will be laid to rest on January 19, 2022, at a private Family Funeral.  A celebration of life will be held later when we can meet safely.  The family has entrusted the gentle care of Elmo to Rivera Family Funeral Home in the beautiful Espanola Valley. We invite you to post a condolence, a thoughtful message, a photograph or share a memory for the family to read on the guestbook at www.riverafamilyfuneralhome.com (505)753-2288.
