SYLVIA MAESTAS, loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at her home in Española at the age of 90. Sylvia was born on November 6, 1930 to Mary Gonzales in Trinidad, Colorado and raised by her beloved grandmother Josephita Gonzales. After graduating from Trinity High School, she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she met her husband of 67 years, Herman Maestas. 

In the late 1950’s she moved to Espanola and became a 4-H leader and involved with Amantes de Flores Club, where she won the first ever “Award of Distinction” for her flower design. Her love for flowers drove her to begin her career as a florist, and in 1969 she opened Pueblo Flowers, which she ran for many years. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Josephita Gonzales; mother, Mary Gonzales-Pontaza; sister, Marianne Rutherford and brother, Rick Pontaza. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Herman Maestas; her five children, Lawrence and Yifang Mao-Maestas of La Quinta, CA, Stephan and Elizabeth Maestas of Espanola, Thomas and Darlene Maestas of  Santa Fe, Christopher and Renee Maestas of Denver, CO, and Mariadele and Perry Vigil of Espanola and brother, Ralph and Mae Gonzales of Denver, CO. Grandchildren: Ian Maestas, Michaela Maestas, Marqueta Maestas, Rachael Maestas, Michelle Salado, Samuel Maestas, Matthew Salazar, Madalene Vigil, Matthew Vigil, Jordan Vigil, Nicholas Vigil, Santiago Archuleta, Mateo Gallegos, Christopher Michael Maestas, Cooper Maestas and Grayson Maestas; great-grandchildren, Adrian Maestas, Peyton Maestas, Kaylee Livermore, Lauren Salado, Steven “JJ” Salado and numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. The family of Sylvia wishes to thank everyone for their love support and prayers. We especially want to extend our thanks to the loving staff of Ambercare and Giving Home Health Care. Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, a private service will be held for the immediate family. Serving the family as pallbearers are her grandsons, Ian Maestas, Samuel Maestas, Matthew Salazar, Nicholas Vigil, Christopher Michael Maestas and Cooper Maestas. Honorary pallbearers are the remaining grandchildren and great grandchildren.
