Two friends and I attended this year’s Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative general membership meeting in order to help reach the quorum and change the by-laws. It was fun but a farce.

The drive through the mountains was lovely. We arrived about 12:30 p.m. and they were beginning to run out of food. It was obvious that they were not expecting a quorum. The location and facilities are great but we were sitting on the side of the stage and couldn’t hear any of the speakers. This is a wonderful family event that I hope will continue but at this rate the by-laws will never be updated.

Please think outside of the box so that our Co-op can move forward. There must be other ways to update the by-laws. One possibility would be to have mail-in ballots. The actual business meeting could be held at one of the casinos in or near Española with a buffet lunch after the meeting. Paper ballots could be available at the door as well. Maybe the meeting could also be on Zoom for those who can’t get out.

Local elections must also be updated. It feels like a popularity contest with who has the biggest canopy and freebies. Please make mail-in ballots available in order to encourage more participation.

We hope that our present board will move us out of Tri-State and into renewable energy. For the sake of the Earth and our future we must move forward and follow Kit Carson Electric Cooperative’s example.
