Class Leader Excels on the Links

Alicia Salazars hands tell the story of why she has became the first golfer in Española Valley High School history to qualify for the New Mexico State High School Golf Championships.
You get blisters on your hands from the work you put in, and she had plenty of blisters, Española coach Tom Velarde said. It takes thousands of balls to reach her goals, and she was never afraid of hitting balls.
A golfer needs three state-qualifying rounds to qualify as an individual for the state tournament. Salazar bagged her first state-qualifying round March 31 when she shot a 96 at Black Mesa Golf Club Españolas practice ground.
It was exhilarating, Salazar said.
Salazar still needed two more rounds, but now she had confidence.
I knew I could do it, she said.
