The Pojoaque Valley Elks boys basketball team got their season underway March 27, losing at Robertson 47-43.
Pojoaque scored just 11 points in the first half and trailed by four, but both teams increased the scoring in the second half. But it was the Cardinals who came out on top.
The Elks look to improve from last year, when they finished 10-17 and 4-4 in District 2-4A, not qualifying for the state tournament. Pojoaque hosts Española on March 30, and then have a break until their next game April 10.

The Mesa Vista basketball team defeated Coronado in a 54-52 thriller on March 29 to start their season.
The Trojans held a 3-point lead late in regulation, but the Leopards tied the game at 50 with two minutes remaining. Mesa Vista retook the lead with a jumper with one minute left. Coronado then missed one of two free throws that could have tied the game, and the Trojans extended the lead with two free throws of their own.
Coronado faces Questa on Wednesday and then again Monday at home. Mesa Vista’s next game is April 7 against McCurdy.

The Pojoaque football team got their first win of the season March 26, in a 36-22 win over Valencia.
The Elks are 1-2 on the year after losing to Deming and Capital to start an abbreviated season. They will face Española Valley on Saturday to finish the season.

The Pojoaque girls basketball team also started their season March 27, losing their first game against Robertson 67-42. The two teams were tied at 13 after the first quarter, but Robertson outscored Pojoaque 23-14 in the second quarter and carried the momentum through the end.
Last season, Pojoaque made the state quarterfinals after a 22-9 season, but graduated star seniors Michaela Martinez and Ashten Martinez.
The Elkettes face Peñasco March 30, then host Escalante on Thursday.

The McCurdy volleyball Bobcats lost their last match of the season March 27 against Mora.
The Bobcats won the first and third sets, but ultimately fell, 25-27, 25-15, 23-25, 25-25, 15-6. McCurdy finished the season 1-3 after a short notice start with barely any practice.

Pojoaque volleyball finished their season March 26 with a loss at Moriarty in five sets, 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13. Sophomore Adriana Rodriguez led Pojoaque with 12 kills on 32 attempts.
The Elkettes finished the year 4-4. They lost a chance at winning the district with two losses to end the season, having lost at Los Alamos in straight sets March 24.

Mesa Vista volleyball finished the season 3-7 overall, and 1-3 in the district to place behind Mora.
The Lady Trojans had their last match March 27 at Mora in straight sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-18.
The season was an improvement from last year, when Mesa Vista finished 0-20 without winning a set.
