Teams Prepare for District Play

The high school basketball season is rapidly drawing to a close, with the regular season finishing up this week and teams heading to their respective district tournaments next week as a prelude for the state tournament’s big dance in March.

Feb. 11

Peñasco 53, McCurdy 41 The host Bobcats (7-16, 0-7 in District 5-2A) trailed just 33-27 entering the fourth quarter but were unable to rally for the win against the Panthers.

Rehoboth 72, Dulce 46 The host Hawks (14-9, 5-2 in District 1-2A) got 15 points from Jaiden Yazzie and 10 from Eric Tsosie, but they could never overcome a rough start, trailing 33-19 at halftime.

Feb. 12 Mesa Vista 55, Escalante 51

The host Lobos (17-6, 5-2 District 5-2A) let a seven-point, fourth quarter lead slip away as the Trojans (20-3, 7-0) rallied behind Andres Valdez, who scored seven of his 15 points in the final quarter. Jordan Gallegos had 16 points for Mesa Vista, with Santiago Martinez, whose late steal sealed the outcome, added 11 and Ezequiel Nevarez 10. RJ Atencio and Mateo Torrez led Escalante with 14 points each.

Taos 62, Pojoaque Valley 50 The visiting Elks (11-13, 4-2 in District 2-4A) took a 20-8 first-quarter lead, but they could not sustain it in the second half as they were outscored 39-15 after the break with the Tigers’ Malakhai Ely going for 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Española Valley 54, Moriarty 46 Coronado 37, Tse’ Yi’ Gai 26

Feb. 14

Mora 61, McCurdy 19 The visiting Bobcats (7-17, 0-8 in District 5-2A) lost for the ninth consecutive time, despite trailing just 12-11 after the first quarter. But McCurdy managed just one second- half point against the Rangers.

Escalante 55, Peñasco 51 The host Lobos (18-6, 6-2 in District 5-2A) overcame a 23-20 halftime deficit with a big third quarter, then held on for the win against the Panthers.

Dulce 81, Ramah 31 Jaiden Yazzie put up 23 points, with Eric Tsosie adding 13 and Dravon Harrison 10 as the host Hawks (15-9, 6-2 in District 1-2A) wasted little time in putting the hammer down on the Mustangs, taking a 22-11 first quarter lead and going up 51-18 at halftime.

Feb. 10

Pojoaque Valley 31, Taos 16 After a sluggish start, the host Elkettes (16-7, 4-2 in District 2-4A) put together two strong defensive quarters, outscoring the Lady Tigers 25-4 in the second and third quarters.

Feb. 11

Rehoboth Christian 44, Dulce 41 (OT) In a back-and-forth game, the host Lady Hawks (11-10, 2-5 in District 1-2A) ran out of steam in the overtime period, dropping a tough district game to the Lady Lynx. Dulce’s Mattison Vigil scored 17 points and Emma Martinez-Pierce had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Peñasco 53, McCurdy 39 Kaylee Martinez put up 15 points for the host Lady Bobcats (15-8, 3-4 in District 5-2A), who otherwise suffered from a lack of production and could not overcome a 20-12 halftime deficit.

Feb. 12

Mesa Vista 68, Escalante 29 Aubrey Maestas came up big with 18 points, four assists and four steals, while Aaliyah Boies added 17 points with six assists and six steals to power the host Lady Trojans (21-2, 7-0 in District 5-2A) past the Lobos (6-16, 2-5), who trailed 42-13 at halftime.

Coronado 47, Tse’Yi’ Gai 33

Los Alamos 32, Española Valley 28 A gritty defensive effort went for naught as the host Lady Sundevils (16-9, 6-1 in District 2-4A) failed to score in the fourth quarter, helping the Lady Hilltoppers end Española Valley’s nine-game winning streak.

Feb. 14

McCurdy 70, Mora 11 The visiting Lady Bobcats (16-8, 4-4 in District 5-2A) jumped out to a 22-3 first-quarter lead and were never threatened thereafter by the Rangerettes.

Dulce 45, Ramah 36 The host Lady Hawks (1210, 3-5 in District 1-2A) got production from up and down the lineup, with Anya Rivas stepping in to deliver a double- double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Pierce-Martinez had 16 points with eight rebounds and six steals, while Mattison Vigil had 16 points and five steals.

Mesa Vista 56, Questa 40 Aubrey Maestas had 12 points and eight steals, with Isabella Gallegos adding 11 and Janessa Sandoval 10 for the host Lady Trojans (22-2, 8-0 in District 5-2A), who jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead.

Peñasco 56, Escalante 41 Adryana Ulibarri posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the host Lady Lobos (6-17, 2-6 in District 5-2A), but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Panthers.
