Lady Sundevils Dominate Alamogordo Invite

Although the state basketball tournament is in full swing, spring sports are already going strong.

Girls tennis

Feb. 27

Española Valley

With 23 points, the Lady Sundevils dominated the Alamo Invite in Alamogordo, losing just one singles match and one doubles match to finish seven points ahead of runner-up Artesia.

March 6

The Lady Sundevils pulled a double clean sweep out of the Española Tri, blanking both Belen and Grants 9-0. Española was so tough that the Lady Pirates only managed to win two sets and the Lady Eagles could not pull out even one. In singles against Belen, Olivia Suazo, Sofia Fulgenzi and Esmeralda Trevino all only dropped one game in two sets, as did the doubles teams of Fulgenzi and Amelia Davis-Martinez, Myranda Arellano and Trevino.

Española Valley

March 6

It was a tough outing for the Sundevils in the Española Tri as they lost 7-2 to Grants and 9-0 to Belen.

Against the Pirates, Brayan Calderon at No. 5 singles, pulled out a three-set victory 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Cody Trujillo won at No. 4 singles after taking the first set and his opponent retiring.

Baseball

March 3

Santa Fe Indian School 10, Española Valley 8

The host Sundevils (0-3) held an 8-5 lead heading into the sixth, but gave up the tying runs in that inning and two more in the seventh to take the loss against the Braves.

March 5

Bernalillo 16, Española Valley 1

The host Sundevils (0-4) gave up 12 hits and walked 10 batters in losing in five innings on the mercy rule to the Spartans.

Raton 12, Pojoaque Valley 5; Pojoaque Valley 15, Raton 5

In the opener, the host Elks gave up 17 hits while only collecting seven in the loss to the Tigers. In the back-end game, the Elks (2-3) pulled away with a four-run second inning and added five more in the fifth.

March 6

Española Valley 16, Navajo Prep 7

After falling behind 7-0 in the second inning, the host Sundevils (1-4) rallied for four in their end of the second and seven more in the third against the Eagles to pull out their first win of the season.

March 7

Capital 23, Española Valley 1

The host Sundevils gave up 17 hits and hit another seven Jaguars, who put the game away with a 15-run third inning.

Softball

March 3

Pojoaque Valley 20, East Mountain 4; Pojoaque Valley 17, East Mountain 1

Freshman Elizabeth Hansen drove in four runs in the opener, and Izabella Gray and Kasey Naranjo each scored three times, while Lainey Romero did not allow an earned run for the host Elkettes against the Timberwolves. In the second game, Alison Paytiamo drove in three and Adaya Garcia and Mya Talache each scored three runs for the Elkettes (2-1), while Rainey struck out five in three innings to get the win.

Track and Field

March 7

Pojoaque Valley

For the boys, Isequel Villegas went 40-feet, 10-inches in the triple jump to tie for first at the Tiger Invitational in Los Lunas, while the 4×200 yard relay team took fifth in 1:41.97.

For the girls, Anjolie Gallegos was third in the 100 dash in 13.51 seconds, while the 4×200 relay team was second and the 4X100 relay quartet was third.

Coronado

Lonisio Ethan Vialpando showed a strong effort in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches to take sixth in the Tiger Invitational in Los Lunas. He also was eighth in the triple jump.
