Letter to the Editor 4/2/26

The Northern Río Grande National Heritage Area would like to publicly thank Representative Joseph Sanchez for his continued leadership and support of cultural programs that strengthen our communities and drive economic development across Northern New Mexico.

Our organization was created to preserve and activate the region’s living cultures, languages, and landscapes while connecting those traditions to real economic opportunity. That work is not easy, especially in rural communities like those in Rio Arriba County. It requires consistent investment and a clear understanding that culture is not just something to preserve—it is something that can sustain communities.

Over the past several years, Representative Sanchez has demonstrated that understanding through his support of programs that have a direct, tangible impact on our region. Because of that support, the Northern Río Grande National Heritage Area has been able to expand cultural programming, educational classes, and partnerships that benefit local residents.

That impact can be seen at the Los Luceros Historic Site, where we are bringing new life to a historic place through classes, workshops, and community events. It can be seen in our partnerships with Northern New Mexico College, and in events like the Rio Grande Sky Fiesta, which bring families and visitors together while supporting the local economy.

For those of us who live and work in Northern New Mexico, this kind of investment matters. It helps ensure that our communities are not left behind and that our traditions remain a foundation for future generations.

We appreciate Representative Sanchez’s commitment to our region and his continued support of efforts that honor our culture while creating opportunity.
