Athletes Eye Potential for Advancement

The regular season for spring sports finishes up this week as teams eye their potential for advancing into the postseason.

Baseball

April 20

McCurdy 15, Mesa Vista 5; McCurdy 20, Mesa Vista 15

Chris Sandoval had a triple among his three hits and drove home four for the host Bobcats (9-9, 8-4 in District 5-2A), while Ethan Bolton had three RBIs and Ethan Martinez and Ryan Valdez each added two against the Trojans (2-11, 1-9), who got three RBIs each from Samuel Epling and Ezequiel Nevarez in the second game of a doubleheader. In the opener, McCurdy scored 10 runs over the final two innings to break a 5-all tie as Bolton threw a complete game and struck out 13 over five innings and Valdez drove home five. Nevarez had two doubles among Mesa Vista’s five hits.

April 21

Peñasco 14, Mesa Vista 11; Peñasco 15, Mesa Vista 8

Samuel Epling drove home three and AJ Sandoval had two RBIs for the visiting Trojans (2-13, 1-11 in District 5-2A) in the second game of a doubleheader against the Panthers. In the opener, Sandoval had three hits, including two doubles, while driving home two and scoring twice. Hunter Garcia also had two runs and two RBIs, as did Epling.

April 22

Los Alamos 17, Española Valley 3

Five errors led to 10 unearned runs, dooming the host Sundevils’ (4-19-1, 0-9 in District 2-4A) hopes of ending their 11-game losing streak, despite two hits, a run and an RBI from Aaron Quintana.

Taos 15, Pojoaque Valley 9

Ezekial Atencio went 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored, and Andres Treviso and Noah Torres each scored twice for the host Elks (6-15, 2-5 in District 2-4A) against the Tigers.

April 23

Santa Rosa 20, McCurdy 0

Ryan Valdez hit a double and Ethan Martinez and Patrick Lovato had singles and that was the extent of the Bobcats’ offense (9-11) against the defending state champion Lions at McCurdy.

Questa 11, Mesa Vista 7; Mesa Vista 9, Questa 8

AJ Sandoval pitched a complete game and the visiting Trojans (3-14, 2-12 in District 5-2A) broke a 6-all tie with three runs in the top of the seventh, then held on against the Wildcats in the second game of a doubleheader to snap an 11-game losing streak. Shai Romero smacked a triple and scored three runs, while Samuel Epling and Hunter Garcia both scored twice. In the opener, the Mesa Vista bats woke up a little, scoring all seven runs in the fourth inning with Jordan Romero collecting two hits and scoring twice.

April 25

McCurdy 11, Mora 5; Mora 15, McCurdy 5

The visiting Bobcats (10-11, 9-5 in District 5-2A) scored 10 runs over the final three innings with Patrick Lovato driving home three runs and Isaac Corona and Ryan Valdez each adding a pair in the opener of a doubleheader against the Rangers. In the second game, Ethan Martinez drove home two runs and Chris Sandoval had two hits, but the rest of the McCurdy bats were silent.

April 24

Los Alamos 11, Pojoaque Valley 7, Los Alamos 6, Pojoaque Valley 1

The visiting Elks (6-17, 2-7 in District 2-4A) managed two hits, with José Lujan hitting a double and scoring in the second game of a doubleheader against the Hilltoppers. In the opener, Pojoaque put together a six-run rally in the third to tie it at 6-all, but Los Alamos never stopped hitting. Andres Treviso and Lujan each drove home two runs.

Softball

April 21

Mora 18, McCurdy 1; Mora 24, McCurdy 14

April 22

Los Alamos 10, Española Valley 2

The visiting Lady Sundevils (7-15, 5-4 in District 2-4A) cranked 11 hits, including three by Sarai Morales and two by Kayla Quintana, but they could not come up with the big with runners on base as the Lady Hilltoppers ended Española’s three-game winning streak.

Taos 17, Pojoaque Valley 1

Elizabeth Hansen drove home the only run for the visiting Elkettes (2-18, 0-7 in District 2-4A), who also got a hot from Makayla Sanchez.

April 24

Los Alamos 15, Pojoaque Valley 0; Los Alamos 21, Pojoaque Valley 2

Elizabeth Hansen had a double and an RBI and Makayla Sanchez also drove home a run in the second game of a doubleheader for the Elkettes (2-20, 0-9 in District 2-4A) against the Lady Hilltoppers. In the opener, Mya Talache and Alison Paytiamo collected Pojoaque’s only hits.

Track and Field

April 21

Española Valley

Averi Schultz turned the Taos Tiger Invite into her personal medal factory as she won the 400 meter dash in 1 minute, 1.65 seconds, and also took third in the 100 (13.31), the 200 (27.95) and the long jump (15-feet, 8-inches). And Neveah Cachora was third in the 1,600 in 5:49.78. For the boys, Elijah Martinez was third in the 800 in 2:05.56.

McCurdy

Marisol Serna was fifth in the 1,600 in 6:04.03 at the Taos meet, while Ethan Bolton was fifth in the javelin with a heave of 120-7.

Escalante

RJ Atencio won the high jump (5-8) at the Rattler Qualifiers in Tucumcari, while Braylon Emory was third in the 200 (24.16), Julio Lujan was third in the 400 (52.98) and Richard Glover was third in the long jump (20-7).

Annlee Robinson was third in the 200 dash at the in 28.83.

April 24

McCurdy

Ethan Bolton tossed the javelin 139-1¾ to win the Northern Rio Grande Invite at Dulce, and he also was second in the 110 hurdles (21.91) and third in the triple jump (36-8¼), while Aaron Martinez was third in the 800 at 2:26.46. Gabriela Velasquez took second in the 100 in 13.74, while Marisol Serna was third in the 800 (2:41.33) and the 1,600 (6:07.39).

Mesa Vista

Andres Valdez took home a bunch of gold medals at the Rio Grande Invite, winning the 100 (11.59), the 300 hurdles (43.54) and the long jump (19-8). Mark Trujillo won the discus in 112-9, followed by Jordan Gallegos (97-6). Trujillo also was second in shot put (36-8), while Ezequiel Nevarez was second in both the 800 (2:07.52) and the 1,600 (4:49.67), while Noah Ortiz was third in the 3,200 in 12:20.40. Jonathan Martinez took third in the high jump (5-10). Jordyn Serrano went 4-10 in the high jump to win, while Valery Martinez took home gold in the javelin at 86-1½, followed by Jaslene Torres in second (84-4¾). Alyssa Alire was second in the discus (67-9) and Emmalynn Torrez was 300 hurdles (1:05.21).

Dulce

Kashonda Trosper won the 3,200 at the Rio Grande invite in 1:28.31 and Emma Pierce-Martinez was second in the triple jump at 31-3¼. Anya Rivas picked up second in the shot put at 24-2, just ahead of teammate Kureiana Frank at 24-1, while Mattison Vigil was third in the javelin in 78-9¼. For the boys, Markol Vicenti won the 400 in 55.88, with Jeixner Mosende taking third in pole vault (7-6) and Jarius Willie third in the javelin (121-7¾).

Escalante

Annlee Robinson won the 200 at the Rio Grande invite in 28.44 and Braylon Emery was second in the 200 art 23.93, followed by teammate Julio Lujan at 24.08. Michael Vance took second in the high jump at 5-10.

April 25

Coronado

Mia Gallegos was fifth in the 100 (14.29) and the javelin (70-1), while Eli Martinez was fifth in 110 hurdles (18.23).

April 26

Española Valley

Neveah Cachora was second in the 1,600 in 5:47.79 at the Horsemen Invitational, and Averi Schultz was second in the long jump at 16-4. Jadon Vigil took third in the 400 in 52.81.

Pojoaque Valley

Isequel Villegas soared 41-11 to win the triple jump at the Horsemen meet, while Jeremiah Ortega was third in the shot put at 40-7. Alessandria Roybal was sixth in the 400 at 1:09.46.
