Man With a ‘Secret Weapon’ Chases Thief

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

Grandpa Stole ‘Fluffy’

Feb. 18

5:51 a.m. A man at Circle C was asking for money and brandished a knife.

9:30 a.m. A caller reported there was a pile of electronics in the ditch near East Montana Vista Street and South McCurdy Road.

10:26 a.m. An overdose was reported on Angel Duran Drive.

12:22 p.m. An Alcalde caller said her father stole her dog, left to Los Alamos and won’t give the dog back.

1:26 p.m. Employees at the Ohkay Casino found a gun in a room while cleaning.

4:19 p.m. A person went to the Okay Owingeh Police Department and said someone was letting air out of employees’ tires.

7:42 p.m. An overdose was reported on Santo Niño Lane.

8:33 a.m. A Middle San Pedro Road caller found a baggie of white powdery substance in their backyard.

11:03 p.m. An Española Hospital caller said a cow is walking in the middle of the street.

School Stripped of Wire

Feb. 19

5:54 a.m. A caller reported her friend was walking around the Santa Claran Casino Hotel without a shirt and yelling. The caller went back to check on her and couldn’t see her.

8:57 a.m. An Abiquiú caller said the old Coyote Elementary was broken into over the weekend and stripped of copper wiring.

9:01 a.m. A Star Lane caller reported a client has homeless people living in a tent behind their house the client wants them removed.

11:16 a.m. A St. Thomas Parish in Abiquiú caller said a man was sleeping in front of the building and was throwing rocks before he fell asleep.

1 p.m. A Family Dollar in Chimayó district manager went to the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office to file a report for theft of money from the store by a former employee.

3:17 p.m. A person went to the Española Police Department to file a report because their work truck was stolen.

4:09 p.m. A Goodwill caller said a couple of bullet shells were found in a donation box and they want to turn them over to the police.

4:34 p.m. A caller reported a person in a car and believe they were selling drugs at La Joya Street and South McCurdy Road.

5:59 p.m. A caller said a man was hitting a woman in a vehicle traveling near the Dreamcatcher Theater.

7:22 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman near R&E Glass who was standing in the middle of the road and trying to wave people down.

In a Van Under the Trees

Feb. 20

7:25 a.m. A caller reported a man was crying, screaming and walking up and down the road in Hernandez.

8:34 a.m. Minors were in possession at Española Valley High School.

8:57 a.m. A man was detained after jaywalking near McDonald’s.

10:47 a.m. A Chimayó caller said his father is at his house and is threatening him.

10:55 a.m. A Rio Arriba County Health Commons caller reported a person is sitting in a vehicle and not getting out. The same person was trying to get into vehicles on Tuesday. Police reported the woman had consumed alcohol but didn’t have keys to the vehicle and the vehicle was turned off.

11:44 a.m. A Family Learning Center caller said a man was urinating behind the pre-school.

12:16 p.m. A caller reported a person kept going in and out of a burnt house on Calle del Rio and North Railroad Avenue.

1:03 p.m. A Lyden caller said someone broke into her vehicle and took a key to a cabinet in which she kept her jewelry.

2:20 p.m. An officer stopped a jaywalker near McDonald’s.

3:13 p.m. A Lybrook caller requested a welfare check on a person lying in the middle of the road.

3:29 p.m. A caller reported a man was breaking windows with a crow bar at La Joya Street and North Riverside Drive.

3:31 p.m. A head-on collision was reported in Hernandez.

3:39 p.m. A Hernandez caller said her husband has been drinking and having affairs. He is being belligerent and breaking all the doors.

4:18 p.m. A Rodeway Inn caller reported an older man dropped off a girl that looks like a hooker.

4:19 p.m. A Chimayó caller said a man with mental problems had a knife and was hitting the countertops and broke a computer. The man’s mother has a restraining order against him.

5:03 p.m. An overdose was reported at Española Pathways Shelter. Three doses of Narcan were administered.

9 p.m. A First Baptist Church caller said a person in a van is parked under the trees and they tried to make contact but the person wouldn’t roll down the window.

9:35 p.m. An Ohkay Express Mart caller reported a man with a knife in his hand threatened her then got into a car and left.

9:46 p.m. A Hernandez caller said his neighbor and two men went to his house with guns then left.

11:30 p.m. A Chimayó caller reported a man was having alcohol withdrawals.

Can’t Force Him

Feb. 21

12:03 a.m. A vehicle hit a light pole next to the Dollar General on West Santa Clara Bridge Road.

7:18 p.m. A Chimayó caller said her son needs to go to the hospital. The son was in the background saying he’s fine and doesn’t need to go to the hospital and no one can force him.

9:33 p.m. A woman was refusing to get out of a vehicle after a traffic stop at Walmart.

11:56 p.m. A Valley Superette caller said someone was banging on the door with an ax.

12:22 p.m. A Calle Lopez caller said her neighbor has had his generator on all night long and she has a migraine and he won’t turn it off.

4:24 p.m. A caller reported a person on an electric scooter is riding in the road near the Ohkay Casino.

5:43 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller reported a man stole his bicycle while traveling toward El Llano Road. He chased the crook with a machete and the man fled toward the “messed up” apartments.

5:45 p.m. A Hernandez caller said a woman has been drinking all weekend and might have alcohol poisoning.

Framed by the Landlord

Feb. 22

5:14 a.m. A Hernandez caller found his window broken after arriving home.

5:31 a.m. A Calle Redonda caller said his property was being broken into and he was threatening to shoot people that go and steal from him.

8:43 a.m. A U.S. Highway 64 caller reported a man’s death.

9:56 a.m. An open door was reported at a vacant building on East Bond Street.

10:18 a.m. A Los Luceros Historical Site caller found a balloon with possible drugs in it at the visitor’s center and wants a deputy to pick it up.

10:19 a.m. A Calle Redonda caller said a man who stole his bicycle yesterday came back and rode toward the low income housing area. He said he has a “secret weapon” and is chasing the man.

10:56 a.m. A man’s death was reported on San Juan Drive.

12:30 p.m. A Calle Adrian caller said the landlord is on the property and she thinks he’s breaking things and going to blame her.

2:27 p.m. A caller reported three or four females are physically fighting on Camino Cielo Grande and El Llano Road.

3:38 p.m. A caller said he dozed off and drove off the road in Medanales.

5:06 p.m. A Velarde caller reported her husband was outside and the neighbor threatened to shoot him and their nephew.

5:09 p.m. A Velarde caller said there’s a structure fire on the west side of the river near La Canova.

6:13 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller reported he is walking down the road with a machete and taking things into his own hands.

7:58 p.m. A caller said a woman wearing a camo jacket and sparkly shoes is walking down Hill Street and was picking locks at the gym.

Returning the Dog

Feb. 23

10:26 a.m. A Calle del Rio caller reported iron bars were stolen from a burnt house last night.

11:16 a.m. A girl in Hernandez was attacked by dogs that bit her legs.

11:46 a.m. A caller reported a driver that looked impaired almost hit them and other vehicles as it was driving toward Los Alamos.

12:16 p.m. A Chama caller said his neighbor stole his dog and broke into his house to take the dog back.

12:54 p.m. A head-on collision was reported in Hernandez.

1:03 p.m. A New Creations Ministry caller said someone in a green Jeep dumped trash all over the parking lot.

1:09 p.m. A Calle Gallegos caller reported he got out of his vehicle to close the gate and a man and woman got in and stole it.

1:58 p.m. A Department of Labor caller wanted to file a report for vandalism and possibly arson.

2:10 p.m. An Inside Out Clinic caller said her vehicle was being worked on and she had her title, insurance and registration in it and they all went missing.

2:14 p.m. An officer stopped two people who were jaywalking near O’Reilly’s.

2:50 p.m. A Pine Avenue and Eighth Street caller said two German shepherds jump a fence, go at people, then jump back over the fence. They want animal control to check on them.

4:31 p.m. An Ohkay Express caller reported a woman in a truck is at pump 6 and is panhandling.

4:53 p.m. A caller said a homeless man and woman are fighting and pushing each other at La Joya Street and North Riverside Drive. The man grabbed the woman by the throat.

5:29 p.m. A caller reported finding either lost or stolen property on the side of the road in Blanco.

6:52 p.m. A man refused to submit to standardized field sobriety tests or a breath test and was arrested near McCurdy Ministries Community Center.

7:14 p.m. A man found his stolen vehicle at the Ohkay Casino.

7:24 p.m. A Tierra Amarilla caller said a man assaulted their sister.

7:40 p.m. An overdose was reported in El Rito.

8:12 p.m. A Calle Sierra Vista caller said a 12-year-old is out of control and hitting their legal guardian.

Too Drunk to Ride

Feb. 24

6:39 a.m. A Chamita caller reported his gun was stolen from his house.

7:14 a.m. An Allsups caller said a man hit her in the face with a bag of potato chips.

7:36 a.m. A man lit a napkin on fire at McDonald’s.

8:11 a.m. A Cañada Court caller reported hearing a 17-year-old teen fall. He checked on him and found him unconscious.

9:01 a.m. A homeless man was passed out behind Pizza 9.

12:28 p.m. A caller said a German shepherd was at Kentucky Fried Chicken and it didn’t look like it was being taken care of and people were throwing chicken at it.

1:37 p.m. A Villa del Norte Apartments caller wanted to file a report because a man was “abusing the entire living facility.”

1:44 p.m. A Valley Drive caller said a child or teen threw a rock at her vehicle and damaged it.

2:29 p.m. A caller reported two people with backpacks were in a condemned house on State Road 76.

4:08 p.m. A caller said his vehicle stalled and he got locked inside of it.

4:10 p.m. A man’s death was reported on Camino Cielo Grande.

5:15 p.m. A Chamita caller said her ex got out of jail and isn’t supposed to have any contact with her but has been harassing her.

5:30 p.m. A Chimayó caller requested a welfare check on a man lying in their driveway with a bottle of alcohol next to him and a horse tied up nearby.

6:28 p.m. An Alcalde caller said the neighbor told her someone is breaking into her trailer.

8 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a vehicle is on the lower road and the seat is reclined all the way back, like someone is lying there. The responding deputy asked for a sober, licensed driver to pick up the vehicle.

8:56 p.m. A County Road 102 caller said someone wearing a face mask pulled up halfway was walking up and down the road with a gun and what looks like a holster on their waist.

11:37 p.m. A Calle Don Pedro caller reported his girlfriend was drinking and fell down.

Random Dancer

Feb. 25

1 a.m. A Days Inn caller said they noticed a man run out of a room, hit a woman and pull her into the room.

3:35 a.m. A New Mexico State Police officer requested an ambulance for a man in Chimayó, but then canceled the request.

7:45 a.m. A State Road 76 caller said a man was dancing in their front yard.

9:49 a.m. A woman was panhandling by the entrance of the Ohkay Travel Center.

1:42 p.m. A Calle Jose Pablo caller reported the neighbor hired a man to cut trees on their property, so he asked to borrow the caller’s chainsaw and took off with it.

5:08 p.m. A caller said a car has been parked near McCurdy Lane and Camino Santa Cruz for a while and a woman is sticking her feet out of the window and thinks she might be high on drugs.

5:48 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported 16-year-old boy was threatening to break windows on her vehicle and threw a vacuum at her.

6:49 p.m. An El Llano Road caller said her husband, against whom she has a restraining order, has been posting about her and a wedding anniversary on social media.

11:17 p.m. A Vallecitos caller reported a house is on fire.
