‘Cultures & Creators’ Exhibit Returns to Los Luceros Historic Site
From a Press Release
The Northern Río Grande National Heritage Area (NRGNHA) presents the return of “Cultures & Creators” April 11-19 to the Los Luceros Historic Site 6.
“Cultures & Creators” is an annual visual arts exhibition that uplifts regional artists and centers Northern New Mexico’s cultural traditions through contemporary expression. The exhibition creates space for artists to explore identity, heritage and innovation while engaging the broader community in hands-on, intergenerational learning.
This year’s exhibition, “Interwoven,” highlights the ways culture is interwoven across artistic mediums in Northern New Mexico. The exhibition features works in which traditions, stories, land and lived experience are threaded through creative expression. Works in the exhibition reflect both traditional and contemporary practices, including weaving, embroidery, quilting, textile-based sculpture, and natural and plant-based materials. Together, the pieces demonstrate how cultural knowledge is carried forward, adapted and re-imagined across generations through diverse artistic mediums.
“By highlighting how culture is interwoven across artistic mediums, we are connecting land, history, and lived experience in a way that honors our roots while embracing the evolution of creative expression,” NRGNHA Executive Director Eric Vasquez said.
The nine-day celebration begins with an opening reception on April 11. On Saturday, April 12, the exhibition opens to the public during Los Luceros’ annual Sheep Shearing Day, which includes shearing the site’s flock of sheep. Workshops, demonstrations, artist vendors and food trucks will also be present. During the week of April 15–17, local students will visit the site for hands-on cultural learning experiences tied to “Cultures and Creators.”
Public programming continues on April 18 with a community baking day, horno-fired bread, blue corn biscochitos with piñon and shared sourdough starters highlighting the region’s culinary traditions. The exhibition concludes on April 19 with a presentation from the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project and author readings.
Regular site admission rates apply. Admission is $7 for adults and free to children 16 and younger, New Mexico M veterans, N.M. foster families, and Indigenous/Tribal affiliations.
