A man brandished a gun and threatened employees at the Richard Lucero Recreation Center early Wednesday night, police said.
The crime happened before 5 p.m. at the city-run center at 313 Paseo de Oñate. The recreation facility offers a pool, gym, basketball courts, outdoor fields and other features to community members.
Española Police Chief Mizel Garcia on Thursday said officers immediately responded to the scene and investigators were working to identify the armed culprit.
No one was hurt during the incident, police said. The armed assailant had not been identified as of Thursday morning, and no arrests had been made.
"There was fear of what was going on, but no physical injuries," Garcia said.
The recreation center closed early on Wednesday night as a result of the incident, and will remain closed the rest of the week, authorities said.
No additional information about the incident was made public by police.
