Athletes Gear Up for Final Push

Mesa Vista’s Andres Valdez turned in a special effort at the Rio Rancho Invitational, a track and field meet that included competitors from the largest classifications in the state, as he and the other athletes gear up for their final pushes to state meet qualification.
Baseball
April 7
McCurdy 7, Peñasco 6; McCurdy 11, Peñasco 1
Ethan Bolton threw four strong innings in the second game of a doubleheader, striking out 10 for the visiting Bobcats (3-5, 2-0 in District 5-2A), while Marius Sanchez had three RBIs and Isaac Corona and Justin Lovato each drove home two. In the opener, the Bobcats rallied for four runs in the fifth and final inning to get the win, with Bolton driving home three and Victor Sanchez-Valdez adding two, while Patrick Lovato and Ryan Valdez each scored twice.
Questa 5, Mesa Vista 2; Questa 5, Mesa Vista 4
The host Trojans (2-6, 1-5 District 5-2A) could not hold off the Wildcats, who broke up a tied game in the top of the fifth and final inning of the back end of a doubleheader. In the opener, both teams scored twice in the first inning, but Questa was able to add three runs over the final two innings to get the win.
April 8
Los Alamos 15, Pojoaque Valley 1
Ezekiel Atencio and José Lujan had the Elks (4-13, 0-2 in District 2-4A), but Lujan’s run was the only one they were able to score against Hilltoppers, who scored all of their runs in the third inning.
Bernalillo 11, Española Valley 1
April 10
Questa 7, McCurdy 1; Questa 3, McCurdy 0
Ethan Bolton’s walk was the only base runner for the visiting Bobcats (3-7, 2-2 in District 5-2A) in the second game of a doubleheader against the Wildcats. In the opener, Victor Sanchez-Valdez had McCurdy’s only RBI, driving home Bolton, while Julian Baeza had the Bobcats’ only other hit.
April 11
Los Alamos 16, Española Valley 1; Los Alamos 9, Española Valley 4
The visiting Sundevils (4-15-1, 0-5 in District 2-4A) late rally went for naught, despite two RBIs from Jayden Archuleta in the second game of a doubleheader against the Hilltoppers. Aiden Guinn scored twice in the game. In the opener, Leonard Martinez and Sebastian Trujillo collected Española’s only hits.
Taos 10, Pojoaque Valley 0; Pojoaque Valley 20, Taos 17
Ezekiel Atencio had four hits, including a home run, driving in five runs and scoring three, while José Lujan also had five RBIs and Andres Treviso scored four runs, helping the visiting Elks (5-14, 1-3 in District 2-4A) rally for 11 runs over the final two innings to get the win over the Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader. In the opener, Lujan and Treviso had Pojoaque’s only hits.
Softball
April 7
St. Michael’s 15, McCurdy 0
Jaira Mendoza drew a walk, but no one else reached base for the Lady Bobcats (1-7) against the Lady Horsemen.
April 8
Los Alamos 19, Pojoaque Valley 0
The host Elkettes (2-14, 0-3 in District 2-4A) got singles Mya Talache, Elizabeth Hansen and Savannah Molina, but could not generate much other offense against the Lady Hilltoppers.
April 9
Pecos 11, McCurdy 9
The visiting Lady Bobcats (1-8) let a late 8-4 lead evaporate, despite pounding out 17 hits, including three each from Karina Archuleta, Joslyn Silva and Isabella Perio against the Lady Panthers.
April 10
McCurdy 8, Thoreau 7
Joslyn Silva and Ryah Romero each had three hits and scored twice for the Lady Bobcats (2-8), while Gabriela Velasquez had two RBIs to power the win over the Lady Hawks in the opener of a one day tournament.
St. Michaels’ 18, McCurdy 0
Jaira Mendoza and Aleese Barela each singled for the Lady Bobcats (2-9) against the Lady Horsemen in the back end of a one day tournament.
April 11
Los Alamos 10, Española Valley 6, Los Alamos 13, Española Valley 3
Aliah Villalobos went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run, and Leah Vigil had three hits and scored twice, but it was not enough to prevent the visiting Lady Sundevils (4-14, 2-3 in District 2-4A) from dropping the opener of a doubleheader. In the second game, Vigil had two hits and two RBI, while Nayleah Martinez had two hits, including a triple, for Española.
Taos 15, Pojoaque Valley 0; Taos 13, Pojoaque Valley 0
Elizabeth Hansen was 2-for-2 with a double, but Arrybella Berry got the Elkettes (2-16, 0-5 in District 2-4A) only other hit in losing to the Lady Tigers. In the opener, Pojoaque suffered a no-hitter.
Track and Field
April 11
Española Valley
Averi Shultz had quite a day at the Harry Hayes Invitational in Bloomfield, winning the 200 meter dash in 27.77 seconds and taking second in the 100 (13.44), 400 (1:04.39) and the long jump (15-feet, 4½-inches). Neveah Cachora won the 1,600 in 5:59.62, followed by teammate Christiana Branch in second in 6:12.82.
For the boys, Uriah Sena took second in the long jump in 19-11½, and the 4×100 and medley relays each also finished second.
Mesa Vista
Despite facing 4A and 5A competitors, Andres Valdez won the 300 hurdles in 42.10.
Jordyn Serrano, who already holds in the school record in the long jump, took fourth at the Rio Rancho Invitational in 4-8.
Escalante
Richard Glover went 19-1¾ to take third in the long jump at the Hayes Invite, while the 4×100 relay team, also took third in 46.25.
For the girls, the 4×400 relay team was second, while AnnLee Robinson took sixth in the 200 in 29.04.
Dulce
Emma Pierce-Martinez was strong at the Angelo DePaolo Invitational in Gallup, going 31-5 in the triple jump to take second and was fourth in the long jump at 13-6.
For the boys, Jarius Willie heaved the javelin 110 to take third.
