Peyton Maestas, 10, of Española, an AVID student and fifth grader a McCurdy Charter School, has been chosen as a speaker for AVID Summer Institute 2026.

The AVID Summer Institute is a national professional learning event focused on advancing student success and strengthening educator practice. This year’s event will be June 30 in San Diego, California.

As one of the winners of the AVID Speaker Contest, Maestas will share her personal story, highlighting the impact of AVID on her growth. She will reflect on how AVID has supported the development of skills such as confidence, collaboration, critical thinking and students’ ownership of their learning. These skills prepare student for future opportunities in the classroom and beyond.

This recognition also reflects the collective work of educators, families and peers who create learning environments where every student is seen, supported, and encouraged to pursue their goals. By representing McCurdy Charter School on a national stage, Peyton helps amplify the importance of access and opportunity in education.

Maestas is the daughter of Marcella and Ian Maestas.
